Strike Begins in Belgian Rail and Public Transport Networks

Belgian labor unions have launched a nationwide strike in the transport and rail sectors to protest government budget policies and public service cuts.

Belgian labor unions have launched a nationwide strike in the transport and rail sectors to protest government budget policies and public service cuts.

Following recent widespread protests, the socialist public service union (ACOD) has organized a nationwide strike. The action is a response to public service budget shortages and government plans to limit wage indexation and increase VAT. Consequently, public transport operators 'De Lijn' and 'STIB' are facing severe disruptions. The National Railway Company of Belgium has also announced a reduced train schedule. Beyond transport, public radio and television networks, schools, and postal services are significantly affected by the industrial action. Authorities have warned of ongoing disruptions as unions continue to voice their opposition to the government's fiscal measures.
