The Red Sea crisis, container shortages, and early demand spikes have driven Shanghai-to-US container freight rates to historic highs.
The Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI) reports a sharp rise in spot rates for the Shanghai to US East Coast route. The cost for a 40-foot container (FEU) has reached $9,568, occasionally exceeding $10,000—the highest levels since the second half of 2024.
Ongoing insecurity in the Red Sea forces vessels to divert around the Cape of Good Hope, adding 10 to 14 days to transit times and absorbing global fleet capacity. Furthermore, US importers are front-loading orders to avoid potential port strikes and peak season disruptions. Experts suggest that until maritime security is restored in the Red Sea, freight rates will likely remain elevated.
